The golf club was founded in 1888 during a period when the Spa was
gaining in popularity as a health resort. It lies in Ulladale among
the hills on land belonging to Cromartie Estate, five minutes walk from
the village centre. In situation and scenery it is unique among Scottish
golf courses, sporting both natural and provided hazards over the full
extent of its 40 hectare area and 4956 yards length.
Play was originally over 9 holes but in 1896 the club resolved that
it be extended to 18 holes. Tom Morris of St. Andrews, "the grand old
man of golf" was brought in specially to lay it out. Before long further
improvements were in hand with the redesigning of the inward half in
1907/08. The location of the greens is virtually unaltered since then.
On September 12 1907 Arnaud Massy, the open Champion, and Alex Herd
played two exhibition matches, when Herd beat the champion by 5 and
4 and 2 and 1, making a record round of 66. This was the last recorded
event over the original 18 holes. Massy of Golf Club Boulie, Versailles
wrote the Club Secretary: 'je certifie que la course est magnifique'.
Tom Vardon visited the course in 1908 and introduced the pot bunkers,
later filled in. The Clubhouse was built in 1903 to replace the old
croft house, now demolished.
